Himeji Castle

Himeji Castle (姫路城, Himeji-jō) is Japan’s most famous and best-preserved traditional castle, often called the “White Heron Castle” because of its elegant white appearance.

History

• 🏯 Originally built in the 14th century and greatly expanded in the early 1600s.
• It survived wars, earthquakes, and World War II, making it one of Japan’s few original castles.
• Designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1993.
• It is considered one of Japan’s finest examples of traditional castle architecture.
