Roman Baths

Roman Baths are one of Britain’s best-preserved Roman archaeological sites, built around a natural hot spring that has been used for more than 2,000 years.

History

• The Romans developed the site around 70–100 AD after conquering Britain.
• They built a large bathing complex and temple dedicated to Sulis Minerva, a combination of the local Celtic goddess Sulis and the Roman goddess Minerva.
• The baths became an important religious and social center in the Roman city of Aquae Sulis.
