Description

Monarch Butterfly Biosphere Reserve (Reserva de la Biósfera Mariposa Monarca) is one of the world’s most extraordinary natural spectacles, where millions of monarch butterflies migrate from Canada and the United States to spend the winter in Mexico’s mountain forests. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Why it is famous

  • 🦋 Every winter, huge colonies of monarch butterflies cover the oyamel fir trees, sometimes making the branches bend under their weight.
  • 🌲 The reserve protects important wintering areas for the monarch butterfly migration.
  • 🏔️ It is located in high mountain forests with beautiful scenery.
